General Studies from Manhattan College is a Campus Bachelor Liberal Studies degree that prepares you for a Liberal Arts career. Bachelor of Science in General Studies The curriculum for the degree program in General Studies is an alternative to the usual undergraduate curriculum. It features an area of concentration rather than a major, and three areas of lesser concentration. Consequently while there is less specialization, there is greater opportunity for a broader general education. This curriculum is designed to meet the educational needs of special groups of students and requires special advising. Each program provides core requirements in English, fine arts, history, science, and mathematics, philosophy, psychology, religious studies, and sociology as a foundation. The basic core requires forty-eight credits, including nine credits in religious studies , six of which must be electives at the 300-400 level. A student will be required to take one area of concentration (a minimum of eighteen credits beyond the core curriculum) in one of the following areas: economics, English, government, history, language, mathematics and computer science, philosophy, psychology, religious studies, sociology, and science. In addition, a student must follow three areas of lesser concentration (a minimum of twelve credits each beyond the core curriculum) in fields other than the area of greater concentration. The balance of the program will include electives. A student's program may not include electives that exceed twenty-four credits in the field of greater concentration or eighteen credits in the fields of lesser concentration. Fields of lesser concentration may be selected from the same areas as the major concentrations as well as business, education, and applied sciences. Students registered in General Studies are not permitted to take business electives as substitutes for liberal arts or humanities electives. No more than 18 credits in courses in the School of Business may be taken. Students should avail themselves of the services of the Office of the Dean in Arts to ascertain that all requirements for normal progression in their selected fields of concentration are satisfied.
