The Masters of Science Degree in Epidemiology emphasizes methodological issues in the design of studies; the collection and analysis of data; the interpretation of empirical findings; and the development and maintenance of surveillance systems. The program is appropriate for all health professionals interested in developing research skills to use in community or academic settings. The Masters of Science in Epidemiology is a two-year graduate program. The curriculum consists of courses in epidemiologic research methods, the epidemiology of specific diseases, clinical epidemiology, biostatistics, health services research, a seminar series, and independent study under the guidance of an advisor. All students in the program are required to take at least 30 semester hours of course work. Of these 30 semester hours, at least 26 hours consist of required courses. In addition, all students are required to complete a master's thesis. Students with academic preparation in biological sciences or population and health-related social sciences and some quantitative analysis skills have the greatest potential for success in this program. Individuals with educational or work related backgrounds in the health or medical field are considered good candidates. Selection criteria are based on previous academic performance, GRE scores, letters of recommendation, a personal statement and prior research and/or professional experiences.
