The Department of History offers graduate work leading to the Master of Arts degree . In addition to fulfilling the basic requirements for admission to the Graduate School, applicants must present undergraduate preparation of at least 12 credits in history. Those lacking this preparation may make up deficiencies either before or during graduate study. Candidates who choose a course of study requiring a foreign language will be responsible for their own language preparation. Those pursuing the public history option master\\\'s degree who may require familiarity with computers will be responsible for such preparation. Students interested in applying to the graduate program should contact the department to obtain application materials. Students will need to submit a letter discussing their interest in our program; a sample of their writing; and three letters of recommendation from faculty members at their present or prior institutions using forms that will be included in our application materials. The application materials also include a form for students who wish to apply for assistantships or scholarships. In addition to writing to the department, students apply separately to the Graduate School for overall admission to graduate studies at New Mexico State University. Fields of Study The history department offers graduate work in regional fields encompassing Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the United States as well as an M.A. degree in Public History . The department also offers graduate level course work in women\\\'s history, environmental history , foreign relations history, and the history of science and medicine.
