PROAGRAM OVERVIEW Students will focus on art materials, techniques and developmental theory for use in pre-kindergarten to grade 12 classrooms. Age-appropriate evaluation techniques, cross-disciplinary planning, whole curriculum development, multicultural theory, critical analysis and student portfolio development will be emphasized as well as classroom management techniques. KEY POINTS ABOUT THE ART MAJOR Students focus on art materials, techniques and developmental theory for use in classrooms, pre-kindergarten to grade 12. As many as 300 hours in hands-on clinical field-based experiences in diverse classroom settings prior to student teaching. The Arts multi-age licensure provides students with the technical and theoretical knowledge to use while preparing students for the National Proficiency Exams. WHY ODU? ODU education students engage in a variety of field experiences, including student teaching and community service. This face-to-face interaction with children and parents in diverse populations prepares ODU students to successfully teach in public, urban, and suburban as well as private school settings. Technological, research and lifelong learning skills permeate the program creating a highly competitive and comprehensive degree that benefits students in the short and long term. Our program emphasizes the interdisciplinary investigation of art as a way to connect with the subject in a much more in-depth manner, which sets our students apart from those at other universities. CAREER POSSIBILITIES Our graduate are prepared for careers as classroom art specialists, museum educators, art therapists and community center art directors. ON CAMPUS OPPORTUNITIES Extracurricular workshops, independent study and the Senior Portfolio Seminar prepare ODU Art majors for the culmination of their work in the Senior Studio Thesis Exhibition.
