The goal of the clinical concentration as a family nurse practitioner is to prepare the nurse to help meet the primary health care needs of families and individuals within the context of the family and community by providing direct health care. The family nurse practitioner also offers guidance, teaching, and/or counseling that will assist the family to meet its own needs or to seek appropriate resources. Students practice in a variety of settings where primary care is delivered. Health promotion, illness prevention, health maintenance, detection of alterations in health status, and restoration of health are essential areas of study. The foci of this concentration are advanced evidence based practice strategies, research, and leadership. The nurse acquires skills that allow for detection and management of acute self- limiting conditions, selected crisis situations, chronic stable conditions, and conditions with multi-system consequences. The program\\\'s curriculum sequence varies according to semester of entrance and whether the student is in full or part-time study. New core courses (NUR 621, 624 & 655) and some electives will be offered online effective Fall 2006. Graduation from the program provides eligibility for certification by the State of New York as a Family Nurse Practitioner and the ability to take the national certification exam.
