English from Rosemont College is a Campus Bachelor English degree that prepares you for a Liberal Arts career. \\\"The best that has been thought and said\\\" ? that is how the Victorian critic and poet, Matthew Arnold, defined culture. Contemporary graphic novelist Marjane Satrapi instead says, that spheres of \\\"culture are rings of the same chain\\\" and that we should seek out the connections among them across time, geography, genres, and value-systems. The Department of English , Theater, and Writing at Rosemont College offers students the opportunity to explore, integrate, and challenge key issues on literature , culture, and contemporary society through study of fiction, drama, poetry, essays, biographies, journals, diaries, and periodicals. English, English and Writing, and English and Communication majors look back, look around, and look forward in order to understand the complex relationships among language and knowledge, writing and power, and academia and popular culture. Students hear the compelling voices of Shakespeare, Jane Austen, William Wordsworth, T. S. Eliot, Virginia Woolf, and Vladimir Nabokov. They identify with the insistent voices of Toni Morrison, August Wilson, Seamus Heaney, Zadie Smith, and J.M. Coetzee. To understand the current literary marketplace, they will encounter periodicals, graphic novels, and creative nonfiction, whether by Art Spiegelman or Joan Didion. As a result, some students will choose to focus on literature, creative writing, or business and technical writing. Others will specialize in both English and Communication, where they will apply their skills of literary analysis in courses on publishing, design, and editing.
