Nuclear Medicine Technology is a dynamic medical specialty in which low-level radioactive materials (radionuclides) are used for diagnosis and treatment of disease. Nuclear medicine technologists work in three major areas: organ imaging, radionuclide analysis of biologic specimens, and radionuclide therapy. The Nuclear Medicine Technology Program?s goal is to develop competent and professional nuclear medicine technologists who, by virtue of theory and practice, are proficient in all facets of nuclear medicine, are capable of passing the certification examination, and have a high degree of adaptability in a changing technology . A further aim is to develop qualities of leadership prerequisite to teaching and supervision in the profession. The program is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology and is in compliance with the curriculum frameworks as administered by the Florida Department of Education. It is conducted in cooperation with Shands Hospital at the University of Florida, North Florida Regional Medical Center, the North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System, Munroe Regional Medical Center, Ocala Regional Medical Center, West Marion Community Hospital, Lake City Medical Center and several local cardiology practices. POSITION DESCRIPTION Most institutions hiring graduate technologists will expect them to perform optimum quality Nuclear Medicine procedures with a minimum radiation exposure to patients as well as staff. Technologists will perform a full range of diagnostic examinations, such as cardiac, bone, lung, biliary, renal, CNS or thyroid type procedures, employing perfusion, planar or tomographic protocols. Department duties may also include critical patient and physician communications, camera and computer quality control, patient and/or equipment positioning, all imaging (and ancillary) equipment operation, protocol-specific computer acquisition and processing, and performance of other technical, clerical and maintenance tasks necessary to provide patient services in a safe and timely way per institutional policy. TECHNICAL STANDARDS The student must have: 1. Sufficient eyesight to observe patients, manipulate equipment and evaluate procedural results. 2. Sufficient hearing to assess patient needs and communicate verbally with other health care providers. 3. Sufficient verbal and written skills to communicate needs promptly and effectively in English. 4. Sufficient gross and fine motor coordination to respond promptly to the patients? needs, manipulate equipment, lift a minimum of 30 pounds, participate as a team member of four in moving a 150 pound incapacitated patient, and ensure overall patient safety. 5. Satisfactory intellectual and emotional functions to exercise independent judgment and discretion in the safe technical performance of medical imaging procedures.
