Auto Body Repair & Refinishing from Schuylkill Technology Centers is a Campus Certificate Automotive degree that prepares you for a Engineering career. Auto Body Repair & Refinishing is a 1080 hour program. Auto body repairers repair and/or replace panels to conform to the original equipment manufacturer?s specifications. During this program students use the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) technical training program task listings and standards. The program is based on five (5) training areas: structural analysis and damage repair , non-structural analysis and damage repair, mechanical and electrical components, plastics and adhesives, and painting and refinishing. BASIC PAINTING & REFINISHING 90hr/3cr This course will cover applications when various types of topcoats, primers, sealers, and adhesion promoters should be used before painting. The students will be able to describe the role of solvents in refinishing and compare the factory to a repair shop refinished vehicle. Students will also demonstrate the ability to properly handle a spray gun, summarize common spray gun handeling problems, complete spot and panel refinishing. The student will also be responsible for correctly answering ASE style questions relating to refinish procedures. WELDING & CUTTING ~ 90hr/3cr This course will cover general welding practices and industry standards as well as safety. The student will be required to identify three classifications of welding including oxyacetylene welding/cutting and its usage in the body shop. AUTOMOTIVE STRUCTURAL WELDING 90hr/3cr Automotive structural welding will be based upon the usage of mig and plasma equipment. Six basic mig welding practices including electrode size/type and gasses to be used. Explanation of plasma cutting techniques will be included. The student will be responsible for answering ASE style questions relating to welding equipment. NON-STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS & DAMAGE REPAIR ~ 90hr/3cr This section will discuss different types and strengths of metals used in vehicle construction summarizing the deformation of impact on steel. Repair process will included speciality tools such as specialized hammers, dollies, spoons, welders, and files. Metal repair using heat and mechanical shrinking steps will be covered. The student will answer ASE style quesitons relating to non-structural damage repair . INTRODUCTION TO AUTO BODY SERVICE & REPAIR ~ 90hr/3cr The student will be required to describe what happens to a motor vehicle during a collision and summarize the steps needed to repair that vehicle. The student will be able to summarize how work flows through a typical body shop, describe the types of positions or jobs available in the auto industry and identify the shop and inner working of a typical collision repair shop. The student will answer ASE style questions relating to the collision repair industry. PLASTICS REPAIR & BONDING TECHNIQUES ~ 90hr/3cr The objective of this section will be to identify and explain the repair process between two major types of plastics and unknown types of plastics used in automobile repair. The topics covered will be repair of gouges, tears, and punctures in plastice using chemical bonding processes and plastic welding. Applications of fiberglass as a component and as a reinforcement along with the repair of damage surfaces contstructed of SMC and PRIN componenets will be covered. The student will answer ASE style review questions relating to the repair of plastics. PAINTING & REFINISHING ADVANCED 90hr/3cr The student will be required to explain the advantages, disadvantages, and applications of barecoat/clearcoat vs. single stage finishes. The technician will demonstrate the ability to describe and use different spray gun coats including blend coat panel blonding, spot and overall refinishing on steel as well as plastic or composite panels. The student will be responsible for currently answering ASE style questions relating to refinishing procedures. STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS & DAMAGE REPAIR 90hr/3cr This unit will cover how impact forces are transmitted through both full frame and uni-body construction. Analyzing damage using body dimensions, measuring tools datum plane, and centerline concepts as related to uni-body repair using vehicle reference points. The diagnosis of various types of body damage including twists, mash, sag, and sidesway using tape measure, tram bar, and self centering gauges will be covered. The student will answer ASE style related quesitons relating to vehicle measurement and damage analysis. GENERATE A DAMAGE REPORT (ESTIMATE) ELECTRONICALLY ~ 90hr/3cr This component will explain the purpose of the damage estimate, outline the sequence for evaluating the vehicle damage, describe the method of determining the repairability of a damage vehicle using gathered information to determine whether damaged parts should be repaired or replaced. The student will be responsible for explaining the difference between flat rate labor time and overlap labor time, calculate material costs, and generate an electronic estimate using a digital camera, personal computer, and estimating softwear. The student will answer ASE style review questions relating to the estimating process. MECHANICAL & ELECTRICAL COMPONENT REPAIR ~ 180hr/6cr This section will cover diagnosis and minor repairs of powertrain and driveline construction. Eight major areas of ASE topics including steering and suspension, wheel alignment, brake systems, cooling systems, heater operations, air conditioning systems, exhaust and emissions systems. Basic electricity of charging systems, starting systems, and passive restraint systems including seat belts, air bags, and roll bar service. The student will answer ASE sytle quesitons as related to mechanical and electrical component repair. INTRODUCTION TO MOTOR SPORTS FABRICATION & CUSTOMIZING ~ 90hr/3cr Emphasis will be placed on additional technical requirements and extremely high safety concerns. This component will include fabrication of steel and fiberglass components pulsing the utilization of after market components such as wings, spoilers, ground effects, and electronic devices. Refinishing techniques including specialized materials and graphic designs will be implemented. Strict adherence to Pennsylvain State Safety Inspection Laws will be implemented in all repairs .
