Program Format: Campus Program Level: Master

School Counseling from Southeastern University - Lakeland is a Campus Master Counseling and Personnel Services degree that prepares you for a Education career. Anticipating his upcoming arrest and crucifixion, Jesus tried to comfort his disciples, saying, "I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever-the Spirit of truth." The Amplified Bible helps us understand the original Greek wording in John 14 by suggesting other appropriate words for the Holy Spirit's role: Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, and Standby. Together, those synonyms offer a good summary of the roles you take on as a school counselor. Is God calling you to help young students or teenagers, to intercede and advocate for them, to strengthen them, and to stand by them in the midst of difficulties? If so, consider Southeastern University's Master of Science in School Counseling-the higher degree of serving that makes sure you're well prepared. Why Choose This Degree? As you learn about this program, you may realize that God has already prepared the ground: You've earned an undergraduate degree in a field such as psychology, social work, history, education , human services , or ministry. You enjoy interacting with young people. And you're interested in a challenging profession that uses your natural gifts of communication, empathy, and relationship-building. Furthermore, there's an ongoing demand for licensed school counselors nationwide. The National Association of School Counselors recommends a ratio of 200 to 250 students to one counselor . School systems in counties surrounding Southeastern often are unable to fill all their counseling positions each year, and the need is expected to increase. Projections from Florida's Department of Education estimate that by the year 2020-21, this state will require almost 2,000 more school counselors than it currently employs. Why Choose Southeastern? Like Southeastern, large public universities nearby offer this master's degree , and within a curriculum similarly modeled on the standards set by Florida's Department of Education . Only at Southeastern, though, can you benefit from a school counselor program that consistently integrates faith and learning. Our faculty members in this program-licensed counselors and psychologists, members of American Psychological Association and the American Association of Christian Counselors-bring experience from clinical, community, and school settings. They also bring their deep faith, which inspires them to educate you from a holistic approach. You learn to consider each student as a whole person, whose actions reflect multiple dimensions of life: mental, emotional, physical, social, and spiritual. This comprehensive approach is one that Southeastern is distinctively qualified to provide. In your classes, professors raise questions like these: From the perspective of faith, how would we define "abnormal behavior?" What does God's Word have to say about emotional wellness and emotional ill health? The Bible tells us to "renew our minds" and to "take every thought captive;" how can we draw on such principles to help students in public schools develop academic and behavioral strategies? As you progress through Southeastern's program, you find your own faith deepening as well. You emerge with the ability to assess students' needs, to guide students toward productive choices, and to work with parents, teachers, and administrators-all in an intentionally Christ-like way. The Program Earning your Master of Science in School Counseling most efficiently will require a hardy commitment for just 22 months, starting in the fall semester. Southeastern's program includes 60 credit hours: 48 of these come from your academic classes, and 12 from your two practicum courses and the supervised internship. Other than your sixth-semester practicum and your eighth-semester internship, both of which take place in a school setting, M.S. in School Counseling classes are held here on our Lakeland campus. You will attend evening courses during the fall and spring semesters and during two weeklong sessions in the summer--a schedule that allows you to complete your new graduate degree while continuing in a full-time job. We understand that some students may prefer a less intense program, so we've built in an alternative. After taking your introductory course, Foundations of Counseling (offered both fall and spring), you can choose either to pursue your degree at the full-time pace outlined above, or to stretch out your study, taking only one or two courses at a time. Serving- To a Higher Degree Beyond advising teenagers about classes and college, beyond helping a teacher manage an unruly child, a career in school counseling offers you the daily opportunity to serve other people. Southeastern teaches you to perform that service as Jesus would. Here, you become not simply a capable school counselor , but a professional with the heart of a servant. If you're starting to envision yourself as a school counselor, explore the M.S. in School Counseling at Southeastern, where every class enhances your ability to let the higher Counselor work through you.
