Hospitality and Tourism from Southern Illinois University Carbondale is a Campus Bachelor Tourism Management degree that prepares you for a Hospitality career. What will I study? Hospitality and Tourism is a multi-disciplinary major preparing students for employment in the broad field of hospitality management . It is a field of study that equips its graduates with the abilities, skills, and knowledge for handling demanding managerial positions, while instilling a commitment to succeed in an increasingly competitive operational environment. The specialization has a strong business orientation and emphasizes excellence, quality, and professionalism. The academic emphasis is on providing the student with fundamental principles, management concepts, and analytical procedures which will be of value throughout the individual's career. Core coursework includes: hospitality and tourism industries, quantity food production, hospitality human resources, hospitality marketing management , hospitality risk management, service organization management , field experience, and senior seminar. Students complete either two 400-hour or one six-month field experience. The field experience exposes students to a general system of operations and management experiences. To enhance career opportunities, the student has three options from which to chose for specialization: (1) food service management (2) lodging management, (3) tourism management , and/or (4) event planning and management; as well as 21 hours in electives to be put toward obtaining a minor. Overall, a student works with an advisor to design an individually tailored program to incorporate special interests, career development and personal success. What facilities are at SIU? The Hospitality and Tourism Administration major is supported by the University's food production operations, including the "Old Main Restaurant." Lodging and conference facilities are also utilized as learning laboratories. What are my career opportunities?
