Outdoor Recreation Resources Management emphasizes skills in manaement of resource-based outdoor recreation, park planning, environmental and cultural interpretation, public opinion surveys and communication. Complementing the professional core courses accredited by the Society of American Foresters, this program offers courses recommnded by the National Recreation and Park Association. In addition to classroom instruction, students participate in summer field studies to observe public and private sector park management styles on location. Students prepare for professional careers in managing and administering resource-based recreation opportunities in diverse geographic and natural settings. What facilities are at SIU? Located within ten miles of the SIUC campus are a national wildlife refuge, two state parks, four recreational lakes, and a national forest. The 270,000 acre Shawnee National Forest, in particular, provides students with a wealth of hands-on experiences in a natural setting. Department faculty work closely with local managers and community leaders to provide field training and service learning opportunities in areas such as public relations, social and resource inventory, planning and decision-making, visitor impact assessment, and resource monitoring.
