An evolving language and culture with its own history-it began as a formal language tradition in the United States in the early 19th century, with roots in Old French Sign Language-ASL is a highly visual means of thought and expression, involving a range of gestural systems beyond fingerspelling. The New School offers a selection of 13-week evening courses in ASL throughout the academic year for beginners and intermediate students.
