You'll have to believe in yourself, and trust that God, too, believes you were born to be an illustrator. Learn from accomplished artists Your professors believe in you, too. Here, the small faculty-to-student ratio lends itself to mentoring relationships with your professors, who also happen to be working professionals. Professor Ron Mazellan, for example, is a commercial illustrator with an agent in New York City. He's gone from illustrating for advertisements to entertainment materials to brochures to books. He and other faculty know this business, and they are committed to sharing with you the tricks of the trade. Before that, however, you will practice and hone your craft until you've mastered the trade itself. You'll study drawing, design, painting, color theory, computer graphics, illustration and art history, all of which are elements of the artist's palette and all of which are a cumulative challenge. But this is your passion. This is how God has called you to make your mark on the world?with broad strokes of color. And the education you'll receive at IWU will equip you to speak truth into the world around you with the universal language of art. Your unique style of illustration will be your personal voice. By using a variety of traditional and technology-based media, your portfolio will be on par with professional standards by the time you graduate. Spend a semester on an artistic excursion If you aren't finding enough scope for the imagination near campus, consider spending a semester in the land Down Under at the Australia Studies Centre through the Wesley Institute for Ministry & the Arts outside of Sydney. From there, you'll travel to New Zealand and the Pacific Rim on some not-so-typical field trips into a land you'll never forget. Picture yourself in one of these careers Career options for illustrators are more varied than you might think. Sure, you can be an animator or illustrate children's books. But look around you. How many things do you see which use visuals to help communicate? Then consider storyboarding, advertising/marketing, greeting cards, graphical maps, brochures, board games, video games and film. Where does it all end? But the question for you is: Where does it all begin? It all begins at Indiana Wesleyan University where students are invited to write their life story on one of the fastest growing Christian college campuses in the country.
