While printmaking was originally a functional process, a way to generate multiple copies of a written or artistic work, it has since developed into a fine art form in its own right. Printmaking is the production of original images on a separate medium, usually generating multiple copies. Express yourself on other surfaces At Indiana Wesleyan, our Printmaking program develops your technical skill as well as creative methods to express concepts and emotions. You will learn to draw on surfaces beyond the traditional paper and canvas. Think metal. Stone. Silk. These are then treated, inked and run with paper by hand through a press to print as many original pieces as your heart desires. Through your printmaking classes, you'll study intaglio (etching and engraving), monotype lithography, serigraphy (silk screen), and relief printmaking (woodcut and linocut). You'll learn the skillful use of essential printmaking tools, materials and processes and grasp their characteristics and appropriateness to various image-making demands. To round out your major, you'll also take courses in drawing, design, photography, ceramics, visual communications, color theory, illustration, computer graphics and art history. Of course, as with any art major, it's not all about skill. Printmaking is also about self-expression. Along with the ability to master the medium, you'll develop clarity of vision, purpose and self-direction. Fill your four years with unforgettable moments If you aren't finding enough scope for the imagination near campus, consider spending a semester in the land Down Under at the Australia Studies Centre through the Wesley Institute for Ministry & the Arts outside of Sydney, Australia. From there, you'll travel to New Zealand and the Pacific Rim on some not-so-typical field trips into a land you'll never forget. Some art majors will hit the trail within the Smokey Mountains or spend some time in lush Ireland, historic England, New Zealand or China. With choices like these, you will be certain to fill out your portfolio and your college years with impressive moments.
