New Media Arts from Institute of American Indian and Alaska Native Culture is a Campus Bachelor Digital Arts degree that prepares you for a Art and Design career. The IAIA New Media Arts Department offers a rigorous, comprehensive program of study that trains students in all aspects of digital and print media. Students learn the principles from which new media has evolved by studying the history and theory of graphic design. Objectives The curriculum balances the theory and practical application of new media while emphasizing self-motivated study under the supervision of working multimedia professionals to guarantee a comprehensive education in all aspects of new media. This includes methods by which the student can learn new technology. Topics covered include visual literacy, signification and visualization of information, and typography. Students gain experience working in the traditional print, paste-up and layout environments. Students also learn the tenets of the digital environment by taking courses in web design, animation, and digital video production (and post-production) using the latest industry-standard software for digital work, including Quark Xpress, Macromedia Flash, Dreamweaver and Final Cut Pro. Students have the option to graduate with an associate's degree , but most continue on for their bachelor of fine arts degree. For these students, the third and fourth years allow them to specialize and focus on a particular field of new media. The department offers three specific concentrations: graphic design, interactive design or motion design, so that students have the flexibility to refine their skills to a professional degree in one of these areas. Multiple Career Paths New media arts majors graduate with a diverse skill set enabling them to apply themselves professionally in a number of fields within the multimedia industry. Learning the principles and production of graphic design, interactive and web design, 2D and 3D animation, and digital video production (and post-production) qualifies students to become competitive as artists and professionals in the multimedia industry. If they choose, they will also be qualified to pursue their studies further and concentrate in any one of the areas covered by the new media arts curriculum. Graduates of this program are strong candidates for a number of professional tracks ranging from commercial graphic design to multimedia fine art. Possible positions include: print designer (brochures, annual reports, catalogs), package designer, entertainment graphic designer (CD covers, posters, venue promotions, film/TV titles), web site/internet designer, corporate/retail identity designer, corporate/retail branding designer, exhibition graphics designer, publication designer (magazines/newspapers), digital videographer and digital video editor.
