Philosophy from Notre Dame of Maryland University is a Campus Bachelor Philosophy degree that prepares you for a Liberal Arts career. The Socratic dictum that the ?unexamined life is not worth living? provides the fundamental motivation for philosophical study. Following Socrates' lead, the great philosophers asked deep and perplexing questions about the nature of human existence. The Department of Philosophy encourages students to continue this tradition both by actively engaging with traditional philosophical questions and by asking meaningful questions of their own in an attempt to live more engaged and reflective lives. Philosophical inquiry combines a passion for skeptical, critical self-examination and a willingness to question assumptions with an abiding faith that such study is worthwhile even if answers often seem unattainable. Philosophy is among the oldest of the academic disciplines and as such holds a central place in the liberal arts curriculum. All students, regardless of their major, must take two philosophy courses during their college career, one of which may fulfill the values requirement. In philosophy courses at the College of Notre Dame, students might find themselves discussing such issues as the nature of knowledge and reality, the relation between mind and body, the existence of a supreme being, the nature and justification of morality, or the fundamental purpose of human life. The Department offers a major with a curriculum that is historically grounded, but strongly influenced by contemporary thinkers and their works. Philosophy majors must take courses in each of the major areas of philosophy , yet course offerings are sufficiently varied for students to choose courses that pique their own interests or complement other areas of study. Small classes and close relationships between faculty and students allow the traditional classroom to serve as a spring-board for a host of other opportunities, such as participation on the ethics bowl team, independent study, and student thesis presentations. Study in philosophy enhances skills in reading, writing, and argumentation, fostering clarity of thought and critical reflection. This makes philosophy excellent preparation for careers in a wide variety of fields, as well as for graduate school, divinity school, or law school. In addition, as the historical foundation of many other academic disciplines, a philosophy major is an ideal complement to many other fields of study across the curriculum.
