Medical Laboratory Technology from Sandhills Community College is a Campus Associate Clinical Laboratory degree that prepares you for a Healthcare career. Careers in Medical Laboratory Technology Clinical laboratory testing plays a crucial role in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. Clinical laboratory personnel examine and analyze body fluids and cells. Technicians may prepare specimens and operate automated analyzers, for example, or they may perform manual tests in accordance with detailed instructions. They usually work under the supervision of medical and clinical laboratory technologists or laboratory managers. Employment Prospects Employment of clinical laboratory workers is expected to grow 14 percent between 2006 and 2016, faster than the average for all other allied health occupations. Employment vacancy rates average 30 to 50 percent in some areas. The volume of laboratory tests continues to increase with both population growth and the development of new types of tests. New, increasingly powerful diagnostic tests will encourage additional testing and spur employment. Many additional openings will result from the need to replace workers who transfer to other occupations, retire, or stop working for some other reason. Although hospitals are expected to continue to be the major employer of clinical laboratory workers, employment is expected to grow faster in medical and diagnostic laboratories; research, pharmaceutical, and forensic labs; offices of physicians; and other ambulatory health care facilities. Our Program The Medical Laboratory Technology curriculum at Sandhills Community College prepares an individual to perform clinical laboratory procedures in chemistry, hematology, microbiology and immunohematology that may be used in the maintenance of health and diagnosis or treatment of disease.
