Tests involve the monitoring of brain waves, eye movements, muscle activity, multiple breathing variables and blood oxygen levels during sleep using specialized recording equipment. The technologist analyzes the recordings as they happen and responds appropriately to sleep disturbances, frequently while the patient is still asleep. They provide support services related to the treatment of sleep-related problems including helping patients use devices for the treatment of breathing problems during sleep and helping individuals develop good sleep habits. Employment Prospects There is currently a shortage of well-trained sleep technologists. Currently, there are only 14,000 polysomnographers in the United States. The employment prospects for individuals choosing this career are very good. As more people become aware of the dangers of sleep disorders and as we continually expand our knowledge of the need for sleep in all age groups, from children to adults, the demand for highly trained professionals in the field of polysomnography will also grow. Our Program The Polysomnographic Technology program at Sandhills Community College is one of only 21 programs in the United States accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. Upon Completion of the Polysomnography Technology program, students are immediately eligible to take the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologist credentialing exam.
