Careers in Surgical Technology Surgical technologists assist in surgical operations under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, or other surgical personnel. They are members of operating room teams, which most commonly include surgeons, anesthesiologists, and circulating nurses. Employment Prospects Employment of surgical technologists is expected to grow 24 percent between 2006 and 2016, much faster than the average for all occupations, as the volume of surgeries increases. The number of surgical procedures is expected to rise as the population grows and ages. In addition, technological advances, such as fiber optics and laser technology , will permit an increasing number of new surgical procedures to be performed and also will allow surgical technologists to assist with a greater number of procedures. Hospitals will continue to be the primary employer of surgical technologists; although much faster employment growth is expected in offices of physicians and in outpatient care centers, including ambulatory surgical centers. Our Program The Surgical Technology curriculum prepares individuals to assist in the care of the surgical patient in the operating room and to function as a member of the surgical team. Students will apply theoretical knowledge to the care of patients undergoing surgery to develop skills necessary to prepare supplies, equipment, and instruments; maintain aseptic conditions; prepare patients for surgery; and assist surgeons during operations. Graduates of this program will be eligible to apply to take the Liaison Council?s Certification Examination for Surgical Technologists. Employment opportunities include labor/delivery/emergency departments, inpatient/outpatient surgery centers, dialysis units/facilities, physicians? offices, and central supply processing units.
