Construction Trades from Huntingdon County Career and Technology Center is a Campus Certificate Construction Engineering degree that prepares you for a Engineering career. These skills are acquired through a combination of classroom training and hands-on experiences. The program utilizes the apprenticeship training core curricula developed by the national Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. Students, using the shop's extensive inventory of hand and power tools and other equipment of the trade, learn to work effectively in residential construction from the ground up. From site preparation and constructing foundations through framing and exterior construction to interior finishing and installations, emphasis is placed on conforming to OSHA safety regulations and local building codes. Through the cluster concept, students also receive instruction in basic plumbing and heating, electrical service and heating/air conditioning/refrigeration. Typical Program Topics Use of hand and power tools Blueprint reading and specifications Span tables interpretation Identifying grades and species of lumber Basic surveying, site preparation and layout Form-building Placing, reinforcing and finishing concrete Basic masonry Framing of wood structures Roofing Exterior finishing Doors and windows Stair construction Interior finishing and trim OSHA, BOCA and local building codes Safety in the shop and on the jobsite Estimating and scheduling Objectives Students develop the technical knowledge and skills necessary for employment in the building construction trade. Students devote approximately 70 percent of their time to shop work, for hands-on learning in carpentry (rough and finish), masonry, drywall, roofing, exterior and interior finishing , electrical and plumbing/heating, and 30 percent to related theory. Students also do jobs throughout the school for actual work experience in the trade. A graduate of the Building Construction program should be able to: Demonstrate technical skills that meet quality work standards and safety in the building trades . Interpret drawings, specifications, lines, symbols and abbreviations on blueprints and make working drawings. Show proper care and use of electrical tools and materials and be able to requisition these items from a supplier. Prepare building site and layout work. Use mathematics to solve construction problems. Demonstrate knowledge of OSHA safety regulations as well as BOCA and local building codes. Layout, frame and roof residential homes.
