Typical Program Topics Safety in the shop and on the job site; electrical safety Reading, drawing schematics and diagrams Use of care of special tools/equipment Electrical controls and circuitry Residential and commercial circuit design Theory and operational of electric motors Wiring and piping techniques Refrigeration technology Refrigerants and other chemicals Refrigerant recovery and management EPA and other regulations Handling and disposal of hazardous materials Soldering, brazing and welding Types of air conditioning units, heat pumps Energy management and efficiency testing Troubleshooting and repair of HVAC units Objectives Students in the Air Conditioning/Refrigeration program study air conditioning, refrigeration technology , refrigerant technology, refrigerant recovery and management, safe use and handling of hazardous materials, heating, air circulation, duct and pipe system design and layout, thermostats, ventilating equipment, automatic controls, zoning controls, air and water circulators, basic plumbing, electrical wiring and identifying, troubleshooting and repairing the various types of heating/ventilating/air conditioning/refrigeration units. Students devote approximately 70 percent of time to shop work for hands-on learning and 30 percent in the classroom. Students also do jobs throughout the school for actual first-hand knowledge of the trade. A graduate of the Air Conditioning/Refrigeration program should be able to: Demonstrate technical skills that meet safety and quality work standards in the trade. Perform technical work effectively as an entry-level technician in the field of heating, air conditioning and refrigeration installation and servicing. Identify and demonstrate proper care and use of tools and materials and be able to requisition these items from a stockroom or supplier. Read and interpret blueprints/schematics and use them when installing or repairing equipment. Communicate effectively with others. Troubleshoot heating, cooling and refrigeration equipment using standard troubleshooting. Demonstrate knowledge of the operation and use of hermetic, reciprocating compressors. Demonstrate knowledge of EPA refrigerant laws and the correct procedures for recovering and managing refrigerants.
